Board Statement on the Impact of the Disaster Preparedness Response on the Business Sector

During last month’s Board of Directors meeting, the BVI Chamber of Commerce and Hotel Association (BVICCHA) Directors discussed and decided that it was important to request an audience with the relevant Government agencies to discuss the national disaster preparedness and response protocol and the impact of public sector closures on the business sector.  Concern was raised in the wake of the public sector closures related to Hurricane Jerry and Tropical Storm Karen where there was a lot of uncertainty on what expectations were and employers were suspected of endangering their employees.

While the Board acknowledged the need to safeguard the community ahead of impending storms, it was felt that discussions are needed about a standard tiered response that businesses are educated on so that there is alignment in public and private sector responses. This would ensure the safety of the members of the community and mitigate disruption of commercial activity during the preparedness stage. The BVICCHA stands ready to work with all stakeholders to share recommendations offered by our members that foster an environment to conduct business safely and securely.
